Heiko's First Smiles =)

Heiko's smiles can be tricky to catch on camera, but here are a few gems I captured in his first week of smiling!

Okay, mom.... enough with the pictures!!!

Heiko's favorite activity...

Staring at the ceiling fan.

Heiko used to hate diaper changes, would scream through them every time... that is, until he discovered the wonder of the incredible, breathtaking, spectacular bedroom ceiling fan!  It's no ordinary ceiling fan.  This ceiling fan has 5 wooden blades that spin around with such glory and ease, one can't help but bubble over with excitement.  Take a look at young Heiko as he gazes upon the almighty ceiling fan from the ideal viewing perspective of his changing pad.

Oh, and did I mention... our baby is a smiler now!  Prepare for optimum cuteness.

Oh Happy Day!

This proud mama has to take a minute to brag.  Jonas has been out of town this week (in California for a really great opportunity in his job), and I was nervous beyond belief to be alone with no breaks or help.  Yesterday on his 6 week birthday however, Heiko decided to be so nice to mommy!

In the morning during some awake time, Heiko was watching his toys that hang over his bouncy chair.  All of a sudden I saw him yawn, and watched his eyes start to droop.  I couldn't believe what was happening.  Usually he has to be held or rocked to sleep for his daytime naps, and they usually involve some crying/whining, a pacifier, sometimes some white noise.  But right in front of my eyes, Heiko put himself to sleep in that bouncy chair.  It was amazing.  He took a good hour and a half nap, and I got to eat, wash my face, brush my hair, brush my teeth, and put on mascara and a necklace (oh the little things that make you feel human again)!

Later, after lunch, I had my 6 week postpartum doctor appointment.  I had been dreading this outing because Heiko had decided a week prior that he hates his carseat.  He and I had an interesting experience on a quick trip to the mall to pick up a couple things for Jonas.... I was that mother with the screaming baby.  Anyway, we made it to Kaiser without crying.  We made it inside without crying.  We made it to the exam room without crying.  We made it through the exam with minimal crying.  ;)  We made it through my flu shot with no crying (neither one of us!).  We made it back to the car with no crying.  He even fell asleep on the way home, so I kept driving and got myself a decaf mocha frap to celebrate our carseat victory!

It was a beautiful day outside, and I wanted to go on a walk, so I decided to test my luck with putting Heiko in a baby carrier that he previously hated being in.  Well, today he decided he liked it after all.  He fell asleep after the first block.  It was so refreshing, and the perfect way to conclude our happy day.

We survived without daddy!  Our little Schnitzel is growing up!

Keeping an eye on his pink elephant.

 Oh my!  I'm naked!

Sleeping with his giraffe.

The Ravens outfit that he was swimming in 2 weeks ago we now have trouble buttoning closed!

Just handsome.

Growing and Shrinking

Growing

Heiko spends a lot more time awake nowadays than he did in his first few weeks, and we spend that awake time making him super smart and strong! We read books, look at toys, swing and bounce in his specials chairs, listen to all kinds of music, sing, get massages, have staring contests, look in the mirror, look at things around the house and outside, go on walks, and do exercises like tummy time, sitting up, and stretching.  Here's a video of his tummy time last week, getting so strong!

Shrinking

The day after we got home from the hospital, we went out to the front yard so our neighbors could meet Heiko.  The 10 year old boy who lives next door took a look at Heiko, and then looked at me confusedly and asked, "Are you pregnant again?"  Yes, I did still have about a 2 month pregnant looking belly, but explained that it was just some leftover fluff and no, I was not pregnant again 4 days after I gave birth.

Most of that fluff went away rather quickly, which I attribute to getting sick on that 4th day and not being able eat anything for a few days.  Or I just got lucky.  Anyhow, we saw the same neighbor boy yesterday as we were leaving to go for an evening walk, and he kindly hollered, "Hi Brittany!  You've lost weight!"  Thanks 10 year old neighbor boy... I think.

Here are some more pictures, just for fun!

Those Longhorns are such a snooze lately....
I get to have my hands free during daytime naps!  And this is where I keep them.

And here.

Sunshine time!

Heiko has been a little bit jaundiced since coming into this world, but thankfully not enough to require any kind of treatment.  To make sure it doesn't get worse, and to hopefully help it go away, we have been taking him out for a few minutes of sunshine every day.  He absolutely loves basking in the sun, he coos and waves his arms all around, soaking it all in!

Here's a video (from my phone, not the best quality) of Heiko's sunshine time!

One Month

Yesterday was Heiko's one month birthday!  Hard to believe this little man has been with us for one month already.  In his one month, Heiko has grown a ton and is developing so quickly.  He weighed 8lbs 13oz a week ago, so he is probably over 9 pounds by now.  He has some new rolls and an extra chin, has outgrown some of his newborn clothes, and is in transition to wearing size 1 diapers!  His eyes used to constantly dart around, but now he focuses and stares at people and objects now, taking everything in.  He can lift his head pretty well during tummy time now, and can hold himself up with his arms a little bit.

Heiko is still a grunter, but is sleeping like a champ at night now!  We moved his co-sleeper basket to his crib in his room because we weren't sleeping with all the grunting, and he has taken to the isolation quite well.  He whines and grunts a little when I put him down, but then usually falls asleep within 5 minutes and sleeps for 2 hours (even 2.5 a couple times)!  We watch and listen on our awesome video monitor, and when he's ready to eat again, he lets us know.  =)

Nanna came to visit us again this week, so next week will be my first full week alone at home with Heiko boy.  Our next visitor is Aunt Vera in November, so we're on our own for awhile!  Wish us luck!

One month old!

Check out my new 2nd chin!

I'm one month today??!  Yikes!  I'm getting old!

Tummy time!  Getting stronger...

Mile High Grunter

Klaus and Nayna came to Denver to visit and meet their newest grandchild over a long weekend.  They were a huge help around the house and with Heiko, who had decided last week that he didn't like sleeping in his bassinet, which was never his favorite sleeping spot to begin with.  He much preferred sleeping on one of us, his grunting would subside quite a bit when being held.  Oh, the grunting.

Heiko grunts.  It's his trademark.  It stems from his frustration with his immature digestive system.  Sometimes the grunting helps him produce something, sometimes not.  Either way it's noisy, it's hard to sleep through, and it happens a lot.  Especially when he is sleeping, which is something he does quite often.  See videos below for a little taste....

It was so nice to have Grandma and Opa Klaus (he loves it when you call him that) around to hold Heiko and help him through his grunts while Jonas and I got some sleep, because when Heiko decided his bassinet was the enemy and he didn't want to sleep in it anymore, the grunting intensified and the sleeping screeched to a grinding halt.

On Sunday we decided very ambitiously to take a day trip drive up into the mountains to see the Aspens (got to love fall!) and have lunch.  Heiko had never been further than the doctor's office before, which is only a 15 minute drive.... and we were planning to drive for hours.  And he is 3.5 weeks old.  Ambitious is an understatement.... crazy is more like it.  But much to our surprise, everything worked out perfectly!  Heiko slept the whole time, with a couple of nursing opportunities thrown in here and there.  All that sleep made us a bit nervous about how the night would go though... especially knowing that Grandma and Opa Klaus were leaving that evening and wouldn't be there to hold little Grunter.

But lo and behold, Heiko gave us another lovely surprise!  After our last evening nursing session, I nervously tiptoed back to the bedroom, expecting to put him down and hear "grunt, grunt, grunt, scream!!!!!"  I cautiously laid him down in the enemy bassinet, and waited.  And waited.  And waited.  Nothing happened!  No grunts.  No cries.  No whines.  No screams.  Just sleep!  Jonas and I wondered, "Who is this child?" We checked to make sure he was breathing a couple times, happily accepted that he was indeed ours, and went to sleep as quickly as possible.  He (and consequently, we) slept for 3 hours in the enemy bassinet.  Woke up.  Got a fresh diaper.  Nursed.  I tiptoed to the bedroom again for bassinet attempt #2, and voila!  2 hours of sleep.  Woke up.  Fresh diaper.  Nursed.  Bam!  Another 2 hours of bassinet sleep!

This kid was a rockstar last night.  Granted, his second and third sleeps were fairly noisy, but sleep is sleep.  I'm learning to block it out.  And hoping that this pattern continues!  Knock on wood.

Out for a walk in City Park.

Best view in Denver.

Heiko and Grandma

Fall in Colorado, gorgeous.

Nursing with a view!  Much better than the view from my couch, but a little more challenging.  =)

Trying out our new Moby Wrap!

It's a hit!

Happy Family  =)

Maybe the Raven's win was the cause of Heiko's peaceful slumber....

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for.... it's grunt time!

In this one, you can even catch a little smile at the very end!
