15 Months
We're a little late on the 15 month update... it's been a weird/crazy month. After sleepless nights with Heiko's first ear infection, teething pain from his first molars, and being evacuated from our smoke damaged house, let's just say we are ready for this month and all it has brought us to be over.
Heiko has been such a trooper through it all. We have been staying with my parents in their temporary apartment north of Denver (They are finally here!! And just in time to rescue us!) for the last week, and Heiko is doing awesome here. He has slept perfectly, and is having a blast looking out the window for the horses ("See!"), meowing for the very shy kitty to come and see him, and running like lightning while pushing his rocket up and down the halls.
He is talking like crazy, his list of words is a little over 60 now! Here are some of his new words-

His stats for his 15 month appointment were as expected... big. He is in the 90th percentile for weight and height at 27lbs and 32 1/2 inches. His head circumference is 95th percentile.
Heiko had a great Christmas; he thanks all of his super grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and of course, Santa for all of his fantastic gifts!
He is an absolute joy, and such a light in this dark and difficult time.

Such a toddler.
Heiko is becoming less of a baby and more of a little boy every day.
One of his favorite things to do right now is play hide and seek. He finds little corners in the house where he can hide, and then says "boo" when you find him and cracks up.
He also loves to throw balls and put balls (and books, and coasters, and sippy cups, and shoes) through his basketball hoop.
He understands pretty much everything we say to him. He follows directions (when he wants to) and knows where things go.
He has a bit of a hitting problem... not out of anger, but just in a playing way. It hurts though, this boy is strong as an ox. So we tell him "no hitting", but he only laughs at us.
Heiko hates brushing his teeth. But he has teeth! 6 of them! 4 on top, 2 on bottom.
He loves being outside. He lasts longer in the cold weather than I do.
He is a little monkey. He climbs on anything he can. But he is not very adept at getting down, so we have to watch the little daredevil.
Heiko likes to dance; his new move is spinning in circles.
He makes the most amazing connections. For example, a couple of weeks ago he wanted to get through the baby gate to the kitchen, so he went and found my keys and brought them over to try and "unlock" the gate.
Heiko doesn't walk anymore, he runs. Or pitter-patters. Or marches.
He is just so stinking smart. He surprises us every day with something new that he says or does.
Here is a list of the words that Jonas and I can think of that Heiko knows. The list is at 39 words right now. So far he hasn't connected any words into phrases, but I'm guessing that will happen soon!

Beach Boy
We were really curious about how Heiko would react to the sand, surf, and sun when we traveled to San Diego for Vera and Chas' wedding a few weeks ago. Well, this boy LOVES the beach. As soon as we walked out into the sand, he plopped down and started touching and playing with the sand. When we finally got down to the water, he was a little hesitant at first, but then we couldn't get him away! He would walk back through the sand a bit, plop down and play with it a little, then run back toward the waves. And, there was very little sand tasting! It was so fun to see him so in love with the beach, we are already thinking about a beach vacation this summer!
We had such a great trip. The wedding was beautiful, and the family time was wonderful.

Halloween
Heiko was a dragon for Halloween. He didn't go trick-or-treating, but he did wear his costume to the fall festival at his daycare, and he greeted trick-or-treaters to help hand out candy. Mostly, he liked grabbing and throwing the candy out of the candy bowl, and slam-dunking the candy into his basketball hoop. He had a super fun Halloween!

A day at the farm.
We went to Mile High Farms yesterday to pick pumpkins, and it was so fun. Definitely becoming a Philipsen family tradition.
We climbed the hay castle, which had a surprising amount of plywood for a hay castle.
We checked out all the pumpkins.
We posed for pictures.
We took a hay ride and mom tried to get me to wave at the camera... I'm good, ma.
We searched high and low for just the right pumpkin.
We tested their weight load capacity.
And we gave them a thump for good measure.
We found the best pumpkins of the bunch.
We met some noisy animals.
We checked out some spooky houses.
We hung out with good friends.
And Heiko entered a strong man competition.
We had a fantastic day at the farm!
Now, we need to find a secret squirrel-repelling recipe to coat our pumpkins with. A mommy squirrel and her babies have been foraging for pumpkins, they already destroyed Heiko's pumpkin that he painted with his friend Raleigh last weekend....

A tooth!
Our poor gummy baby has been toothless for more than 13 months. But today he finally has his first tooth poking through! It's his front bottom left tooth. And two on the top are right under the surface too, so they should be popping through in the next week or so. Hooray! Heiko will be happy to have something to scrape my apple cores with.

Oh yeah... 13 months old!
Apparently after the 1st birthday, the months are less exciting... I just realized that Heiko turned 13 months on Sunday! I have been meaning for the last couple days to share some really fun things that Heiko is doing now, so I guess they can be his 13 month post. =)
-Will point to his belly button when you ask him too.
-Points to his mouth when you ask where his teeth are.... even though he doesn't actually have any teeth.
-Pats his head when you mention the word "hat".
-At dinner a few nights ago we put some chicken down on his tray and said, "Here's some chicken, Heiko." and he started clucking like a chicken. "Baaak baaak baaak" It was so hilarious.
-Drops everything and walks straight to the front door when you mention going outside.
-Most of the fun new language things (both receptive and expressive) he has totally picked up on his own.
-Except for his "touchdown" signal... we definitely taught him that one.
-Finds his basketball and makes a basket when you tell him to "dunk it", "slam dunk", or "make a basket"
-Heiko has moved to the toddler room at daycare, where he is with kids from 13 to 24 months old. Because of this transition, he has gone down to 1 nap a day and is taking most of his milk from a sippy cup. We officially said goodbye to 30 dollar cans of formula a few weeks ago, and it was such a happy goodbye. Heiko loves milk, just like his mom, and we love the cost of his milk. Heiko loves his new class and has been doing great there. They provide a lot more cognitive stimulation and more organized learning activities than the infant room, the kids go outside twice a day, and there are many more opportunities for physical development, so we are really happy with the transition. Heiko has been a little crankier than usual in the evenings, but I think he will adjust pretty quickly.
-He loves to play outside. He would walk around picking up sticks and rocks (and milk jugs from the milk boxes...) and banging them on the ground all day long if we let him. He occasionally still tries to put rocks in his mouth, but doesn't really do it with sticks and leaves anymore.
-Knows about 15 words, and tries imitating a few others. Mostly words that begin with B, D, M, and N.
-Walks about 99% of the time, and sometimes goes so fast he almost runs.
This is such a fun time... he surprises us every day with new language, understandings, and skills. He is such a happy boy, too.
We are very excited to have family around soon. My parents (Heiko's Nanna and Poppy) are officially moving to Denver! My dad accepted a job doing the same thing he has been doing at his current job for the past 20 years, and it was the first interview he had! He will be moving out here in about a week, and my mom will follow after her retirement in December. After being so far from family for the last 5 1/2 years, we are really excited to have them around.
